INTRODUCTION // Pressure
The dyadic piece “Pressure”, created in 2001, has a strong symbolism and an allegorical character. Burkhard Schittny is showing himself in two simultaneously playing videos of 6.18 minutes each, simply in a white t-shirt on a black background. The two projectors are facing each other in this installation as in a dialogue – the observer is standing in between. Schittny is using a convincing stratagem: for one of the videos, he recorded himself upside down. The blood is flowing in his head. The pain is getting stronger. Its difficult for the viewer, to watch this video performance – he is suffering, empathizing. Powerlessness and desperation become physically sensible. “Pressure” is telling us, that being human has different sides. The “I” is always also someone else.
