William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) Hawarden/Wales
British statesman and Liberal politician, four-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
WHO ALSO was closely connected to the interests of Britain’s plantation economy. In his early political career he defended the rights of slave owners in parliamentary debates. His father, Sir John Gladstone, owned several plantations in the Caribbean and received one of the largest compensation payments awarded to slave owners under the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833.
