Robert Peel (1788-1850) Bradford/England
British Conservative statesman and two-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
WHO ALSO came from a family whose wealth was closely connected to the transatlantic plantation economy. His father, the industrialist Sir Robert Peel, was a prominent supporter of slave-owning interests and circulated a petition opposing the abolition of the slave trade in 1806.
Backed by his family’s considerable fortune, Peel entered Parliament at a young age, securing a parliamentary seat in 1809 soon after reaching adulthood.
