Robert Clive (1725-1774) Shrewsbury/England
English general, statesman and Governor of Bengal, widely known as “Clive of India”.
WHO ALSO played a central role in establishing British colonial rule in large parts of the Indian subcontinent as a leading figure of the East India Company. Following the Battle of Plassey in 1757, Clive helped secure British control over Bengal, enabling the large-scale extraction of wealth and resources and laying the foundations for the expansion of British imperial power in South Asia.
His actions contributed to the transfer of immense wealth from the region to Britain and were associated with policies that destabilised local economies and agricultural systems. Clive himself accumulated a vast personal fortune, becoming one of the richest men in Europe.
