Horatio Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916) London/England
Irish-born Field Marshal in the British Army and British imperial administrator.
WHO ALSO commanded British forces during the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902), where he implemented a scorched-earth policy and established a system of concentration camps for Boer civilians and Black Africans. More than 100,000 people were interned in these camps; overcrowding, disease and poor conditions led to the deaths of tens of thousands, including many children.
Black Africans held in separate camps were often used as forced labour in support of the British war effort.
