Henry Tate (1819-1899) London/England
English sugar merchant and philanthropist, founder of the Tate Gallery.
WHO ALSO built his fortune in the sugar trade, a global industry whose wealth had been established through plantation slavery in the Caribbean. By the time Tate expanded his business, sugar production in many regions relied on wage labour and systems of indentured labour that replaced enslaved labour after abolition, while remaining embedded in the economic structures created by slavery.
