Garnet Joseph Wolseley (1833-1913) London/England
Irish-born Field Marshal in the British Army and one of the leading military figures of the British Empire in the nineteenth century.
WHO ALSO commanded the British expedition that suppressed the Red River Resistance in 1870, consolidating Canadian federal authority in the Red River settlement and paving the way for the incorporation of Manitoba into the Dominion of Canada.
Throughout his career Wolseley led or participated in several imperial military campaigns, including conflicts in West Africa, Egypt, India and Burma, contributing to the expansion and enforcement of British colonial rule.
